Massapequa's Tom Katsigiorgis bounced up and down working on his single-leg takedowns on one side of the gym as Freeport's Terry Brown paced the other
Katsigiorgis, the defending county champion at 189 pounds, and Brown, the defending county champ at 215 pounds, waited anxiously for the conclusion of the 189-pound bout at Friday night's Conference I dual meet between Massapequa and Freeport
The Katsigiorgis-Brown match was supposed to serve as the main event and decide what everyone thought would be a close dual, but it never happened. The drama that unfolded before the 215-pound class served notice to the rest of the county that Massapequa still is the team to beat
On a night that belonged almost entirely to Massapequa, Pat Callahan finished off Eddie Gordon for a technical fall win at 6:00 of the 189-pound bout to give the Chiefs a 34-21 lead in its 34-25 victory at Berner Junior High School in Massapequa
What Callahan did was put the exclamation point on a Massapequa win in which the Chiefs (5-0) took eight of 13 weight classes. With the crowd standing and roaring its approval, Callahan was mobbed by his teammates
"It was a great win," Massapequa coach Gary Mims said. "We had a few kids really wrestle at a higher level than anyone could have expected. It was very satisfying."
It would seem some of the capacity crowd would head for the exits after Callahan's win, but the packed house of 1,013 had waited all night to see the final bout
Mims threw them a curve when he opted to use senior John Longo, a mass of muscle, against Brown in the final bout. Brown, the slicker of the two wrestlers, came away with a 17-8 win
"I wanted see Longo go with Brown," Mims said. "I had confidence in him and thought he wrestled him tough."
Massapequa was tough all night
The Chiefs reeled off five straight wins after an opening-bout loss. Matt Lagravinese used three third-period points for a 3-0 win over Joe Gomez at 112 pounds and Mitch Langsam (119) used a takedown and two back points for a 4-3 comeback win over Frank Alvarez
Massapequa's Ryan Kelly, another defending county champ, took a 3-1 decision over Brian Ramirez at 125 before sophomore Travis Cook (130) pounded highly regarded D.J. Bah-Traore, 12-4
A crushing blow for Freeport (4-1) came at 135, where Mike Lombardo, who weighed in at 130, was bumped up and pinned Ricardo Vallejo in 2:42 to extend the Chiefs' lead to 19-6
Mike Armella added another stinging loss when he fought his way off his back to upset Maurice Stringer, 13-8, at 152 pounds for a 28-12 lead
"I thought Travis [Cook] and Mike [Armella] keyed the win," Mims said. "They were outstanding."
"This is where we wanted to be," Freeport coach Joe Chetti said. "We aspire to be in this situation, wrestling against the best. Massapequa is an elite team and tonight, they proved that."

Fantastic Finish for GC
Just winning the final two weight classes would not have been enough
for the Garden City wrestling team Friday in its Conference III match
against Wantagh. Trailing 34-25, the Trojans needed either two pins or a
pin and a major decision. For that they called on Mike Cirrito and
co-captain Dan Smith.
Cirrito worked his way to an 11-0 major decision at 189, leaving the
pressure on Smith. The senior calmly used his "hamstring pull"  -  he
calls it that  because he can never seem to get low enough for a
single-leg takedown  -  and turned it into a half-nelson to pin his
opponent in 33 seconds and give Garden City a 35-34 victory.
"It was a barnburner," Garden City coach Mark Czachor said. "It was
a heck of a match."
Especially for the Trojans, who were without two key wrestlers. Both
Mike Vasilikos (140) and Rory Connolly (171) were out with shoulder
injuries. In place of Vasilikos, Garden City sent Mike Sarcona to the
mat. The freshman, who had just recently been called up to the varsity,
was able to reverse a take-down early in the match and turn it into a
pin in 1:14. Another freshman, Ronnie Lofrese, worked to a tough pin at
103 pounds.

Kregler's Brainstorm Pays Off for Wantagh
Paul Kregler's chat with Wantagh wrestling coach Frank Muzio at theside of the mat before the final period of his 145-pound match wasstarting to get a little heated. While the crowd was on its feetcheering and the opposition was waiting, Kregler and Muzio werediscussing strategy
Trailing 7-6, Muzio told his wrestler to take the bottom positionfor an easy score. Kregler was adamant about taking the top position."He just had confidence in what he was doing," Muzio said. "I let himmake the decision. I figured he had a better idea of what he was feelingout there than I did. He felt he could turn the kid and he did."
Kregler went on to an 11-7 decision over freshman John Creamer as Wantagh beat Clarke, 33-27, in Conference III wrestling yesterday
Theirs was only one of several exciting matches in a meet that was in doubt until the final weight class. Todd Bloom decisioned Tim Long, 3-0, at 119. Freshman Eric Dunn, all 158 pounds of him, lost a 5-3 decision to Mike Muller at 171 pounds that tied the score at 27
"We didn't have anybody at 171 and we didn't want to just forfeit and give up the six points," Muzio said. "I just thoughthe could do well. He had been doing well in practice. He went out there and did the job for us."
Then, in the final match, Glenn Ziminski pinned Tom Catterson in one minute, reaching up under his arm and circling his head to give Wantagh the victory. "It was a close one," Muzio said. "They were all exciting."
