Having
won their league qualifier and catholic state sectional in resounding
fashion last year, Chaminade enjoyed one of its finest seasons under Coach
George Dlugolonski. Unfortunately, Chaminade graduated eight starters from
last year’s championship squad. Despite the lack of returning starters,
Coach Dlugolonski is confident that this year’s team will be as competitive
as last year’s. Chaminade hopes to tap some of its depth in building this
year’s varsity lineup. Considering last year’s results, the Flyers’
strength will reside in the middleweights. Wrestling at 145 pounds, senior
captain Craig Calderone will be one of several key wrestlers in the lineup.
In addition, seniors Ian McMenamin, Tim Higgins, and Mike Casale are focused
to make significant contributions once again. Juniors Brendan Candon and
Pat Doherty will hopefully use last year’s success as a spring board for
this season as well. Anchoring the Flyer lineup at 215, senior John Gravina
has the task of guiding Chaminade’s young heavyweights. In addition,
freshman Anthony Piazza hopes to be a spark plug in the lineup. Coach
Dlugolonski believes that last year’s junior varsity wrestlers are poised to
fill in the remaining weight classes. If this year’s Chaminade grapplers
work hard and encourage one another like last year’s team members did, then
Chaminade will enjoy another successful wrestling campaign. Assisting the
Flyers will be Kieran Griffin, John Nuzzi, Kevin Carroll, John Thomas,
Stephen Beovich and servicing at captains will be Craig Calderone, Mike
Casale, John Gravina, Tom Walsh and Ian McMenamin.
